How to Play State.io

State.io is real-time strategy stripped down to its essentials. Territories appear as dots on a map, each one generating units over time, and the entire war is fought by sending those units from one dot to another. There are no build orders and no unit types to learn — the whole game is a question of where your numbers go and when.

The tension comes from the fact that every unit you send is a unit you no longer have at home. Attacking a neighbour with everything you own can take the territory outright, but it leaves your own border thin for exactly as long as it takes an opponent to notice. Blocking and destroying enemy towers, pushing into their land and defending your own borders are all the same decision approached from different directions.

Because it plays out in real time against rival armies, the game rewards reading the board rather than reacting to it. Every action has consequences that arrive several seconds later, so the players who win are usually the ones who committed to an attack before it looked obvious.

State.io Tips & Tricks

  • Every unit you send is a unit missing from your own defence, so count the cost before committing to a large attack.
  • Territories generate units over time, which means an unattacked dot is quietly building the force that will eventually be used against you.
  • Blocking an opponent's towers is often worth more than taking neutral ground, because it cuts their production rather than adding to yours.
  • Actions take time to land, so commit based on where the board will be, not where it is.
  • Defending and attacking draw on the same pool — spending on one always means spending less on the other.

Is State.io Unblocked at School?

Yes. State.io runs entirely inside your browser tab as an HTML5 game, so there is nothing to download, install or unzip and no plugin such as Flash or Java is required. That matters on a school or office network, because the filters used on those networks usually block installers and app stores rather than ordinary web pages. It works the same way on a school Chromebook, an iPad or a phone as it does on a desktop — the game adapts to the screen you open it on. If the page loads for you, the game will run.

State.io FAQ

What kind of strategy game is State.io?

It is an abstract real-time strategy game where countries and territories are represented as dots. Rather than managing buildings or unit types, you play by directing the units each territory produces, which makes it a tactical game about timing and numbers instead of a base builder.

How do you capture a territory?

You send units into it by clicking the territory you want to conquer. If the force that arrives outnumbers the defenders the territory changes hands; if not, it stays with the opponent and you have spent those units for nothing.

What happens if you attack with everything you have?

You maximise the chance of taking the target and minimise your ability to hold anything else. The game warns that each of your actions will have consequences, and overcommitting is the most common way players lose ground they had already secured.

Why do enemy towers matter so much?

Towers are part of what generates and projects an opponent's strength, so blocking and destroying them limits what they can field later. Taking a tower is a longer-term play than taking empty ground, even though it usually costs more up front.

What makes State.io different from other strategy games?

It removes almost everything except the core decision. There is no economy to manage and no technology to research — just territories producing units and the question of where to send them, which is why the game describes itself as a tactical clash of dots.

Is State.io free to play?

Yes. State.io is completely free on Masked Games. There is no account to create, no trial period and no payment step — open the page, press play and the game starts.
